My younger brother's 22-month-old granddaughter, Hailey, drowned on Sunday. I cannot even begin to imagine what her parents, and my brother, Dave, and her other grandparents and the rest of her family are going through.
I have no words of wisdom or of comfort.
"I'm sorry," seems incredibly inadequate, but I am sorry.
Eric Clapton had the misfortune to lose his 4 year old son, Conor, in 1991, and whether one is religious or not, his eloquent words about grief and loss are better than anything I could ever say:
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong,
and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven
Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven
I'll find my way,
through night and day
Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven
Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
Beyond the door
There's peace I'm sure.
And I know there'll be no more...
Tears in heaven
